The following is a list of the Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences Healthcare electives offered throughout the year:

CDS 400 and 500 Fundamentals of Phlebotomy and Body Fluid Collection

An in depth course in phlebotomy covering aspects of safety procedures, hygiene, capillary puncture, venipuncture, arterial access and maintenance, intravenous access and maintenance, drug administration via IV, intramuscular and subcutaneous methods and non-blood collections of bodily fluids. Prerequisites: None

CDS 405 and 605 Survival Spanish for Health Professionals

Health care professionals will be introduced to basic vocabulary, useful questions and expressions in Spanish needed to communicate in practical health care situations. Students will participate in speaking exercises, dialogue, and role-play activities (field-specific scenarios). Conducted in English. Prerequisites: None

CDS 420 and 520 Competencies in Genetics for Health Professionals 

This course educates health professional students and students interested in the health professions about core competencies in genetics to prepare them to integrate genetics knowledge, skills, and attitudes into routine health care, thereby providing effective and comprehensive services to individuals and families. Prerequisites: Bio 123 and MA 105 or equivalent.

CDS 425 and 525 First Aid & Healthcare Provider CPR and AED Course

The goal of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to perform basic first aid and CPR procedures for adult, child and infant victims according to the American Heart Association (AHA) Standards. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive an AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course certification card, which is valid for two years. Prerequisites: None

CDS 530 Advanced Cardiac Life Support

The goal of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) according to the American Heart Association (AHA) standards. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive an AHA ACLS certification card, which is valid for two years.
Prerequisites: Successful Completion of CDS 425/525 or current American Hearth Association Basic Life Support Certification

CDS 535 Medical Genetics Across the Life Span

This course provides students with information and skills about the applications of medical genetics in patient care throughout the life span. The course includes instruction in genetic family and medical history collection, indications for referral to medical genetics, appropriate use and interpretation of genetic testing in health care, communication skills to effectively work with individuals that have a genetic condition and ethical issues in medical genetics. This course is designed for students that are currently enrolled in a health professions program and/or health related program with a clinical component. Prerequisites: Admission to the Physician Assistant Program or by permission of the instructor

CDS 550 Introduction to Medical History Taking and Physical Examination

This course introduces the learner to the proper way to elicit a comprehensive medical history, perform a physical examination, and report the findings in a systematic and concise format. Prerequisites: None
