Dr. Newcomer has been a faculty member at UAB for over 15 years and is a Professor in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. Dr. Newcomer received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Juniata College (1988), his Master of Science degree in Physics from Wright State University (1991), and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Wright State University (1996). Dr. Newcomer’s scientific expertise is in the area of medical imaging physics with a specialization in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy.

Dr. Newcomer’s most recent activities have involved developing and directing numerous university-wide undergraduate honors programs at UAB. Specifically, during the past 4 years, Dr. Newcomer founded and directed the Experiential Learning Scholars Program (ELSP), provided interim directorship of the Global and Community Leadership (GCL) Honors Program, and was the founding director of the UAB Honors College.

In May of 2013 Dr. Newcomer returned to the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences in the School of Health Professions to be the founding director of the new B.S. in Biomedical Science Program. Dr. Newcomer was also appointed as the Assistant Dean for Honors and Undergraduate Research in the School of Health Professions.

Over the past 16 years, Dr. Newcomer’s research program at UAB has focused on utilizing Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy to study in-vivo human muscle, fat and liver metabolism. This research program has produced over 50 published research articles over the past 16 years. Currently, Dr. Newcomer is collaborating with investigators across the country to study mitochondrial and liver function in numerous patient populations.
