Nearly 30 students from all over Alabama learned how to suture pig's feet from University of Alabama at Birmingham Physician Assistant faculty members Kara Caruthers and Paul Harrelson. The PA program is located in the School of Health Professions. The students are Rural Health Scholars, a five week summer program for rising high school seniors from rural counties. Scholars live on the University of Alabama campus, take two college courses for credit and receive orientation about health careers. SHP has been involved in the program for four years showing students the different options in the healthcare industry. The students also heard from the medical technology program and the Department of Occupational Therapy. After suturing the pig's feet, Caruthers taught the students how to make their own ice cream in seven minutes.
