UAB Physician Assistant student Jordan Smith was named as the 2012 winner of the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants Susan and Tom Lusty Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded yearly to a student in an accredited PA program.
Smith plans to graduate from the PA program in December 2013. She said she wanted to be a surgical PA since she was young, wearing homemade x-ray glasses and a stethoscope. Smith pursued that dream throughout high school taking extra science courses and graduating with 53 college credits.
She has volunteered more than 800 patient care hours. In 2010, she went on a medical mission trip to Brazil with the International Children’s Heart Association assisting in pre- and post-op care of pediatric cardiac patients. Smith said seeing the critical need and life-changing impact of this mission trip crystallized her pursuit of a surgical PA career.
