RT 2013 Sputum BowlFor the second year in a row, a UAB respiratory team won the annual Sputum Bowl at the Alabama Society for Respiratory Care conference on March 6, 2013. Ten teams from across the state competed for the state title.

Four of the student teams represented UAB. The winning team included Jordan Unlap, Katie Jones, Julie Goggins and Caleb Watson who will now be able to compete in the national competition at the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) International Congress meeting in Anaheim, Calif, Nov. 16-19, 2013.

Similar to a scholars bowl, two teams are asked random questions in several categories related to respiratory care. The first team to buzz in and get the correct answer receives a point. The two teams with the most points in the end compete for the championship game. In keeping with the spirit of what respiratory therapists do, the bowl is called sputum which is mucus from the lungs.
