SHP students have the opportunity to get a flu shot on campus. The Student Health Services will offer the shots on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. in SHPB room 236. Students should bring a $20 check or cash. No credit cards will be accepted. To bill insurance, bring a front and back copy of your insurance card.

Sam Serley, a senior in the Health Care Management program and a middle blocker for the UAB volleyball team, is one of only 10 volleyball players from around the country to be named as finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. The award recognizes athletes who excel in community, classroom, character and competition.
UAB Surgical Physician Assistant student Jordan Smith was named as the 2012 winner of the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants Susan and Tom Lusty Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded yearly to a student in an accredited PA program.

From the moment you walk in that door, potential employers are judging you and basing it off of what you're wearing. If you're not dressed for the part, then you may not land that job.
School of Health Professions students will have the chance to learn how to "Dress for Success" at the next Brown Bag lunch on Friday, Sept. 21 from noon - 1 p.m. in SHPB 226. Hosted by the SHP Office of Student Success, this Brown Bag is free (just bring your lunch).
Ronald M. Wyatt, M.D., MSHA, has been named the medical director in the Division of Healthcare Improvement at The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies nearly 20,000 health care organizations and programs in the U.S. In his role, Wyatt will promote quality improvement and patient safety to internal and external audiences, work to influence public policy and legislation for patient safety improvements and serves as the lead patient safety information and education resources within The Joint Commission.

UAB School of Health Professions students are invited to a "Time Management Skills" Brown Bag on Sept. 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in SHPB 224. Just bring your own lunch to this free one-hour professional development hosted by the SHP Office of Student Success.
Chief Information Officer Drex DeFord announced he is leaving Seattle Children’s Hospital next month to take over the same role at Boston-based Steward Health Care. DeFord is a 1997 graduate of the Master of Science in Health Informatics program in the Department of Health Services Administration.
Steward is a 10-hospital system and one of the 32 Pioneer Accountable Care Organizations as designated by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation.

Kay Clements, MA, RHIA, Robert Garrie, MPA, RHIA, and Midge Ray, MSN, MEd, RN, all associate professors in the Health Information Management program in the Department of Health Services Administration, have been reapproved by the American Health Information Management Association as coding system trainers. The three faculty members trained to become proficient in the two parts of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System or otherwise known as ICD-10-CM/PCS.
