The annual award is given to physician assistants who have made “substantial contributions” in teaching, scholarship, administration and/or professional service.

Maday, creator of the PAINE (Physician Assistant IN Education) Podcast that discusses medical topics in a way that is easily understandable and easily accessible for anyone, has long been known for blending creativity and modern technology (he has live-Tweeted a classroom intensive). His ability to take PA education to a new level was a big reason for winning the PAEA Rising Star Award.

"While at the conference, I was able to meet colleagues I have known, literally for years, through Twitter and finally shake their hands, and it most instances, give them a hug because we have known each other for so long," said Maday. "It was also a bit surreal because I had several people come up to me and say 'I follow you on Twitter and love your posts! I use them in my teaching all the time!' It really just highlights the benefits of social media in academia and why educators should not shy away from it, but embrace it because it can open so many doors for you professionally.”

The PAEA says “by integrating technology and social media into his lectures and life,” Maday, who also serves as the UAB PA academic coordinator, “has made an exponential impact, not only in his home state of Alabama, but around the world.”

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by my peers in PA education," added Maday. "My work on the podcast and my social media presence was a big reason why I received this award and it is finally nice to see established educators seeing the benefit that social media can bring to education."

Maday’s win is no surprise to those at UAB who have seen him win the 2015 School of Health Professions Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2014 Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship.

Most recently, Maday delivered the keynote for the UAB Physician Assistant Studies White Coat ceremony – all of which were converted to a PAINE Podcast.
