The University of Alabama at Birmingham Occupational Therapy students and faculty are encouraging you to run, walk or roll at its inaugural 5K race on Sat., Feb. 4, 2012. The “Run, Walk or Roll with UAB OT” race will be held at Heardmont Park on Cahaba Valley Road with registration at 7:30 a.m. and the race beginning at 8:30 a.m.OT students work with various community organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy, Horizons School and AIDS Alabama. Their client’s ability levels vary and can include those in wheelchairs. The students designed the race to allow those in wheelchairs to participate as well.
“Our clients can benefit from the physical activity side of this event,” said Kate Genter, an OT student and one of the organizers of the race.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA)to provide students with scholarships for books, help support their community organizations and enable students to attend the OT national conference.
The cost for the race is $20 if you pre-register by Feb. 1 online at www.uabOT5k.webs.com or at the Trak Shak. Participants can register on the morning of the race at 7:30 a.m. for $25. Race t-shirts will be given to the first 100 registrants. Awards will go to the top three overall male and female winners as well as top male and female in each age group. The race is sponsored by Walls Media, Don Harrison Allstate, The Trak Shak and Spirit of Hope.
