Jonathan Waugh, Ph.D., has been named the interim director of the Respiratory Therapy program in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. He replaced Wesley M. Granger, Ph.D., who stepped down after serving as the first and only director of the program.
“I want to be in a position to help mentor the next program director in the next four or five years before my own retirement,” said Granger.Waugh joined UAB in 1999 serving eight years as the director of the clinical education for the Respiratory Therapy program. He oversees the teaching enrichment program for the School of Health Professions and was recently named at the interim faculty director for UAB’s Center for Teaching and Learning. Waugh also has an appointment as a scientist with the UAB Lung Health Center.
“Dr. Waugh has provided exceptional leadership within the School of Health Professions which has extended University-wide with his recent appointment as the interim faculty director of UAB’s Center for Teaching and Learning,” said Janelle Chiasera, Ph.D., interim chair of the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. “It makes perfect sense for Dr. Waugh to lead program faculty in setting the future vision and direction of the respiratory therapy program.”
The Respiratory Therapy program was established at UAB in 1973 as a certificate/associate program. In 1996, the program moved to the baccalaureate degree level where Granger served as the director for 16 years.
Granger will continue to teach in Respiratory Therapy as well as the Physician Assistant program. He will expand his research efforts with Barbara Gower, Ph.D. in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. In a new role, Granger will serve as a research mentor to the faculty in the department.
