Charles (Chuck) D. Stokes is a nationally recognized health care leader with more than 30 years of health care leadership experience. He began his career as a critical care nurse and nurse executive before completing his Masters in Hospital and Healthcare Administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama.


Chuck joined Memorial Hermann in September 2008 as System Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Stokes was president of NorthMississippiMedicalCenter, a 650-bed tertiary hospital located in Tupelo, Miss., and the 2006 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipient. He has previously served as system COO for three health care systems and as vice president, Operations at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital/Texas Heart Institute in Houston. He has extensive experience in service line organizational development, leadership development, employee engagement and building physician relationships.

Chuck is actively involved in numerous leadership development programs for ACHE, where he holds a Fellowship status, and has authored numerous articles on executive leadership development. His leadership priorities include employee engagement, physician relationships, clinical quality improvement and results-oriented financial performance. Chuck models servant leadership with emphasis on coaching and team building and uses Malcolm Baldrige criteria as a platform for driving operational excellence.

Dr. Robert W. Chappell, Jr. is the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer for Huntsville Hospital, which is located in Huntsville, Alabama.  Huntsville Hospital is an 881-bed tertiary referral center serving north Alabama and southeastern Tennessee.  Huntsville Hospital is the flagship hospital for HH Health System, the sixth largest public health system in the country. 

Dr. Chappell received his Bachelors of Science Degree from The University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1978 and his Medical Doctorate from The University of Alabama School of Medicine. Following completion of his Family Medicine Residency, he completed a Fellowship in Family Medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1987.  He received a Master’s in Business Administration from Auburn University in 2002.  Dr. Chappell is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is a Vanguard member of the American College of Physician Executives.   

His career has included academic medicine, private practice, and over a decade as a physician executive.  He was listed in Best Doctors in America Southeast Region 1996-1997 and has served in numerous community and academic leadership positions.  He is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at UAB School of Medicine. He is a member and faculty for American College of Healthcare Executives with annual presentations at ACHE Congress’ COO Boot Camp.
