Genetic Counseling student receives Mayo Clinic internship Print E-mail

Geoffrey BeekGeoffrey Beek, a first year genetic counseling student in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, received a summer internship with the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The program gives students who are currently enrolled in a master’s degree genetic counseling program direct exposure to the genetic counseling role in clinical genetic laboratories.

“Only a few students are selected each year to participate in the internship,” said Lynn Holt, MS, CGC, director of the genetic counseling program in the School of Health Professions. “With Geoffrey being selected, I feel it recognizes his academic accomplishments at UAB as well as his personal strengths as a future genetic counselor.”

The two-week internship will include experience in cytogenetics, molecular genetics and biochemical genetics with a primary experience in one of these areas.  Students will work directly with genetic counselors employed in a genetic laboratory. Within each laboratory, board-certified directors and genetic counselors work closely with health care providers and laboratory staff to ensure that accurate, reliable and timely results are available to patients.

After completing the internship, Beek will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
