Dr. Taraneh Soleymani is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Nutrition Sciences (DNS) and Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She received her MD degree from St. George’s University, Grenada, WI. She completed her training in Internal Medicine at Seton Hall University, St. Michael’s Medical Centre, Newark, NJ. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and completed her fellowship training in Clinical Nutrition at UAB in June 2011. Dr. Soleymani joined UAB as a faculty in July 2011 where she serves as the Medical Director of the clinical nutrition fellowship.

Dr. Soleymani is a Physician Nutrition Specialist and the Director of nutrition consultation service at UAB Hospital and Birmingham VA Medical Centre. She also serves as the interim clinical mission vice chair in DNS. She is the Medical Director of UAB EatRight Weight Management Services, where she practices patient tailored obesity management. She also oversees its worksite wellness and Nutrition Guidance System for supermarkets initiatives.

Dr. Soleymani’s interests include meal replacement as a weight loss modality, weight maintenance post weight loss, and neurocognitive aspects of obesity. Her clinical expertise includes patient tailored comprehensive medical management of obesity and inpatient nutrition management in the critically ill. Her current research includes a telehealth-based weight management program for persons with traumatic-brain-injury, overeating patters in patients seeking treatment for obesity, understanding racial/ethnic differences in weight loss maintenance and weight regain, and designing a complication based medical model for management of obesity. She is also involved in teaching obesity and nutrition courses to medical students, medical residents, dietetic interns, and physician assistant students at UAB and is the course director for medical school elective course titled: “Obesity, Clinical Nutrition, and Food Policy”, offered to 3rd and 4th year medical students. She is a member of American College of Physicians, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, The Obesity Society, and Obesity Action Coalition.
