Focus of Research

Majority of my research is community-based and involves collaboration with one or more of the departments (such as Neurobiology, Psychology, Physical Therapy, and Medicine), schools (such as dentistry, nursing), and/or centers (such as Center for Aging; Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Autoimmunity Center, and Center for Exercise Medicine) on the UAB campus. Community partnerships, such as with The Seasoned Performers, a nonprofit company serving as a training base for senior adults in Alabama who wish to expand their theatrical skills, is also very fruitful.

Projects related to physical medicine and rehabilitation in the process of expansion include evaluating the efficacy of gaming console home-based exercise on improving aerobic capacity among adults with cystic fibrosis, and the impact of theatre acting on cognitive function in older adults.

Past and current funding sources include National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Department of Defense (DoD) V Funds, American Cancer Society, Scleroderma Foundation, Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund, and South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association.
