nutrition sciencesThe School of Health Professions offers several graduate programs that take only one year to complete. Most graduate programs take two years to finish. Earning a master’s degree also means an increase in salary pay.

Students could earn a master of science in nutrition sciences in just three semesters. The program is specifically designed for registered dietitians or students with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition or a related field.

toshio Sidndey AndoA University of Alabama at Birmingham Physical Therapy student did chin ups using just one finger on each hand in his audition tape for the show “American Ninja Warrior.” That along with his other athletic abilities doing back flips landed Toshio Sidney-Ando a spot to audition for the show back in April.

The Mexican-born student has been enthralled with the show since 2007, but never pursued it until a life-changing experience.

cytologyWant to lead the fight against cancer and disease? Then arm yourself with a master’s degree in Cytology. Come learn more about the program in an information session on May 22 from 4-6 p.m. at Hill University Center in Room 325.

Using microscopes, cytologists evaluate cells from patient samples in order to diagnose and manage certain medical diseases.

topping out ceremonyThe final top beam to the two-floor addition to the School of Health Professions Building was put in place today in a “topping out” ceremony on Monday, May 7, 2012. SHP faculty, staff and students signed the beam along with employees of the contractor, Harbert International, LLC last week. The group watched as crews hoisted the beam to the top with a UAB flag attached.

You are invited to sign on Friday, May 4 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. the final top beam to be put in place to the addition to the School of Health Professions Building.  The beam will be located on 9th Ave. South next to the fence by the construction site.

Then join us at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 4 on 9th Ave. South as we watch crews “top out” the building by hoisting the final top beam in place.

 
Waugh named interim respiratory therapy director Print E-mail

Jonathan WaughJonathan Waugh, Ph.D., has been named the interim director of the Respiratory Therapy program in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. He replaced Wesley M. Granger, Ph.D., who stepped down after serving as the first and only director of the program.

“I want to be in a position to help mentor the next program director in the next four or five years before my own retirement,” said Granger.

 
National center on physical activity and disability coming to Birmingham Print E-mail

National Center on Health, Physical Activity and DisabilityA $3 million, three-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will fund the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability which is locating in Birmingham as part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham/ Lakeshore Research Collaborative. The center focuses on the relationships between good health and physical activity in people with disabilities.

The center director is James Rimmer, Ph.D., recently recruited to UAB as the Lakeshore Foundation Endowed Chair in Health Promotion and Rehabilitation Sciences in the UAB School of Health Professions. Rimmer, who has been developing and directing programs for people with disabilities for more than 30 years, leads the UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative.

 
Plaza coming to life Print E-mail

plaza constructionThe Plaza between the School of Health Professions Webb Building and School of Nursing is almost unrecognizable. Crews have been adding huge planters with trees and flowers to spruce up the area between the two schools. Once the project is complete, employees and students will be able to enjoy outdoor seating and tables with umbrellas during the hot months. A sedum roof covering is being created next to the Learning Resource Center and SON.
