Scholarships
Dean’s
Scholarship - Four scholarships are available per year to undergraduate
students. Three of these scholarships are two-year renewable scholarships
and one is for one year only. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000 per
year. Criteria: a “B” (3.0) average on all collegiate pre-nursing work
attempted. For renewal of a two-year scholarship, a student must maintain a
2.5 grade point average on nursing courses. All applicants for admission to
study leading to the BSN degree at the School of Nursing are automatically
considered for the Dean’s Scholarship. A separate application is not
required.
Jo Ann
Barnett Endowed Nursing Scholarship – Established with funds from friends,
colleagues and family of the late Jo Ann Barnett (BSN 1987, MSN 1990), this
scholarship was created to honor Ms. Barnett’s memory and to benefit
students in the School of Nursing. Criteria: admission to or current
full-time enrollment in the School of Nursing MSN program, with preference
given to those students pursuing a career in neonatal nursing or oncology
nursing. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the
UAB Office of Financial Aid. The School of Nursing Office of Development

Board
of Visitors Endowed Scholarship - Established with funds generated by the
members of the Board of Visitors of the School of Nursing. Criteria:
admission to or current full-time enrollment in study leading to a degree in
the School of Nursing at UAB, and a cumulative grade point average of at
least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to those who are
residents of Alabama, and who express a desire to live and work in Alabama

Marie
Carter Bonner Scholarship
- Established by friends and associates, this
scholarship is a memorial to Mrs. Bonner, who worked as a nurse at UAB
Hospital for more than 20 years and served as Director of Psychiatric
Nursing. Criteria: admission to or current full-time enrollment in study
leading to a degree in the School of Nursing at UAB, and a cumulative grade
point average of at least 3.0. Preference will be given to applicants who
express an interest in psychiatric-mental health nursing. The School of

Carolyn Farrior Boone Endowed Nursing Scholarship
–
Established with gifts from Mr. and Mrs. James B. Boone, Jr., of Tuscaloosa,
Alabama. Mr. Boone is the chairman of Boone Newspapers, Inc., and Mrs. Boone
is a registered nurse and is a member of the School of Nursing’s Board of
Visitors.
Rachel
Z. Booth Endowed Nursing Scholarship
–
Established with funds received from the School of Nursing Board of Visitors
2005 “MASH: Make Another Scholarship Happen”
fundraising event. Dr. Booth served as the School of Nursing’s third dean
from 1987-2005.
Terri
J. Broach Nursing Scholarship
- Established by friends and family members as a
memorial to the late Terri J. Broach, who was a student at the University of
Alabama School of Nursing at UAB. Criteria: must be a resident of the
State of Alabama, be admitted to or enrolled in full-time study leading to
the BSN degree in nursing at UAB, and have a cumulative grade point average
of 2.5 or above. Preference will be given to those who have an active
relationship with a church, synagogue, or other religious institution or
order, and those who show financial need as defined by the UAB Financial Aid

The
Brock Family Endowed Nursing Scholarship – The Harry B. and Jane H. Brock Foundation has
made generous gifts to create an endowed scholarship for the School of
Nursing, in recognition of the nursing career of their daughter, Barrett
Brock MacKay (MSN 1979), who is a member of the School’s Board of Visitors.
Criteria: admission to or current full-time enrollment in a degree-seeking
program in the School of Nursing. Applicants must have at least an overall
2.8 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of the scholarship
application. Preference will be given to applicants that demonstrate
financial need as determined by the UAB Office of Financial Aid. The School

William Groce Campbell Endowed Nursing Scholarship
– Established
by Myrtle Campbell Bell in memory of her brother, William Groce Campbell,
this scholarship was created to benefit students in the University of
Alabama School of Nursing at UAB. Criteria: admission to or current
full-time enrollment in a degree-seeking program in the School of Nursing,
and a minimum grade point average of a 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. The School of

Gladys
Farmer Colvin Memorial Scholarship- Established with funds from the family of
Gladys Farmer Colvin, who was a nurse for many years at the Jefferson County
Department of Public Health. Criteria: admission to or current full-time

Comer
Nursing Scholarship - Established with funds received from the Comer
Foundation. Criteria: must show financial need as defined by the UAB
Financial Aid Office, be a resident of the State of Alabama, have a

in the State of Alabama, and be enrolled full-time in study leading to the
BSN degree at the University of Alabama School of Nursing at UAB. The

to assist those students whose qualifications are meritorious in the School
of Nursing. Criteria: admission to or current full-time enrollment in a

to those that have demonstrated leadership ability and academic promise, by
earning at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average in coursework

Established with funds from School of Nursing Faculty and Staff, this
scholarship was established to benefit the training and education of

of Nursing at UAB and an overall 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average in

of Francis S. Falkenburg, former member of the State Legislature of Alabama

Charles E. Flowers, Jr., Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
–
Established with funds from Dr. Juanzetta S. Flowers and family, colleagues

School of Nursing at UAB. Criteria: admission to or current full-time
enrollment in a degree-seeking program in the School of Nursing. Applicants

“Chick” Hale Endowed Nursing Scholarship- The family and friends of the late Dr.
Elwynn “Chick” Hale have contributed funds to establish a memorial
scholarship in Dr. Hale’s memory to assist deserving nursing students in the
University of Alabama School of Nursing at UAB. Criteria: admission to or
current full-time enrollment in a degree-seeking program in the School of
Nursing, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Nancy
Eastman Harp Oncology Nursing Scholarship - Established as a memorial to Mrs. Harp
(BSN 1972), an oncology nurse and a graduate of the University of Alabama
School of Nursing at UAB who was killed in a tragic automobile accident,
through a generous gift from Dr. J. Patrick Daugherty and her family and
friends. Criteria: current full-time enrollment in the oncology
concentration of the MSN degree, a cumulative grade point average of at
least 3.0, and evidence of marked achievement or potential for marked

Elizabeth Jane Harper Memorial Scholarship - Established by family members as a memorial to
Elizabeth Jane Harper, who was a student at the University of Alabama School

Josephine Harwell Nursing Scholarship
- Established with funds received from the estate
of Mary Josephine Harwell through the provisions of her will. Criteria:
must be admitted to or currently enrolled full-time in study leading to the

cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given
to residents of Elmore County, Alabama, and neighboring counties, and those

Florence
A. Hixson Nursing Scholarship
- Established by family, friends and associates in honor of Dr.
Florence Alberta Hixson, the first dean of the University of Alabama School

S. Ingalls Endowed Nursing Scholarship

Established by funds from the estate of Marie S. Ingalls, a noted civic
leader and philanthropist, who was amember of the School of Nursing’s Board

Belt Ireland Endowed Nursing Scholarship
- Established with funds received from Mrs. William R. Ireland, Sr., to
support Alabama students pursuing degrees in nursing at the University of

Jernigan Nursing Scholarship
- Established with funds received from Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E.
Jernigan, Sr. Criteria: must have a cumulative grade point average of at
least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and be eligible to enroll full-time in a junior
level clinical nursing course at the University of Alabama School of Nursing
at UAB. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate leadership
potential or ability through participation in extracurricular activities or

Margaret Parks Kendrick Nursing Scholarship - Established by Dr. Marvin Hayne Kendrick as a
memorial to his mother, Margaret Parks Kendrick. Criteria: must show

Alabama School of Nursing at UAB, and have a cumulative grade point average

Coleman Lee, Sr., Endowed Nursing Scholarship

Established by Mr. and Mrs. James. C. Lee, Jr., through the Buffalo Rock
Company to honor the memory of Mr. Lee’s father, James Coleman Lee, Sr.,
this scholarship was created to encourage students to enter the nursing
profession and to make it possible for many future nurses to focus on their
studies without the burden of financial pressure. Criteria: admission to or

- Established in memory of Mrs. Luckie by her
husband, Robert Luckie, Jr., and is awarded in honor of Holli Kemper (BSN
1985), one of Mrs. Luckie’s oncology nurses. According to Mr. Luckie, Ms.
Kemper constantly “went the extra mile” during Mrs. Luckie’s terminal
illness, carrying out her duties with great professionalism, cheerfulness
and sympathetic skill. Criteria: must be admitted to or enrolled full-time
in the School of Nursing, a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0
on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to applicants who express an

Spain McDonald Endowed Nursing Scholarship
- Established with funds received from Peggy Spain McDonald, a longtime

Alma
B. McMahon Endowed Nursing Scholarship

Established with funds received from dear friends of Alma McMahon, a member
of the School of Nursing Board of Visitors. Mrs. McMahon received her
nursing degree later in life and worked for 13 years as a Registered Nurse
at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, with 12 of those years caring for
heart patients after they left the intensive care unit.

- Established with funds received from Dr. Marie L. O’Koren and members of

and Mary Anne O’Neal Endowed Nursing Scholarship

Established with gifts from family and friends of the late Emmet and Mary
Anne O’Neal, who, during their lifetime, set an example of grace and
benevolence for their family and for the Birmingham community.

nursing at the University of Alabama School of Nursing at UAB, cumulative
grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and a demonstrated

Reese Phifer, Jr. Nursing Scholarship
–
Established by the Reese Phifer, Jr., Memorial
Foundation to support Alabama students pursuing degrees in nursing and to
honor the late Mr. Phifer. The scholarship assists Alabama residents who are
currently enrolled in, or have been admitted to, the baccalaureate, masters
or doctoral degree-seeking program within the University of Alabama School

and John Robert Endowed Nursing Scholarship - Established with funds from the
Delia and John Robert Trust to support students seeking a professional
nursing career. Criteria: current full-time enrollment in study leading to
a degree in nursing at the University of Alabama School of Nursing at UAB
and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Preference will be
given to those for whom the decision to return to school is a second life
choice; or who may have pursued a degree in nursing earlier in life and been
forced by circumstances to stop that education; or who are returning to
school in order to seek an advanced degree in nursing. The School of

Wilson Rodgers Memorial Scholarship - Established by Dr. Marguerite Rodgers Kinney
(DIPL 1961), a faculty member at the University of Alabama School of Nursing
at UAB, as a memorial to her father. Criteria: good academic standing,
current full-time enrollment in study leading to the MSN degree. Preference
will be given to applicants who are pursuing, or their program of study
shows that they plan to pursue, advanced study in cardiovascular nursing and

Established with funds received from the Benjamin and Roberta Russell
Foundation. Criteria: admission to or current full-time enrollment in study

scale, and must demonstrate financial need as determined by the UAB Office

M. and Jesse D. Smith Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship
- Established by Dr. Bettye Jane Smith as a memorial to her parents, Ethel
McCarty Smith and Jesse Doswell Smith. Criteria: must show financial need
as defined by the UAB Financial Aid Office, be an Alabama resident, have a
cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and be
admitted to or enrolled in full-time study leading to the BSN degree at the

Foundation of Jefferson County Scholarship

Established with funds received from the Sabin Oral Sunday Foundation of
Jefferson County. Preference will be given to a Jefferson County, Alabama,

Dorothy Sterne Nursing Scholarship
- Established with funds received from the
Dorothy Sterne estate through the provisions of her will. Preference will
be given to Calhoun County, Alabama, residents enrolled full-time in study

Student/Alumni Endowed Nursing Scholarship
–
Established with funds raised from current and former students, this
scholarship was developed by former students who wanted to make a difference
in the lives of future students. Every year, former students contribute
through the School of Nursing’s Annual Fund.

admission to or current full-time enrollment in study leading to a degree at
the School of Nursing, and a cumulative grade point average of at least a

Thelma
Walker Mitchell Endowed Nursing Scholarship
–
Established with funds from the estate of Thelma Walker Mitchell, who was a
1941 graduate of the Hillman Hospital School of Nursing at what is now UAB.
She made maternal and child health nursing her life’s work, including many
years as a nursing consultant to the Alabama State Department of Public
Health Bureau of Maternal and Child Health in Montgomery.
Thor-Louck Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
- Established with funds from Isobel H. Thorp and
Phyllis M. Loucks, beloved former faculty members of the School of Nursing.
Criteria: admission to or current full-time enrollment in study leading to a
degree at the School of Nursing, and a cumulative grade point average of at
least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The School of Nursing Office of Development and

Jean
Riley Tomlinson Endowed Nursing Scholarship
- Established by Mrs. Tomlinson, longtime member and former chair of the
School of Nursing Board of Visitors. This scholarship pays tribute to the
nurses and physicians specializing in cardiovascular illnesses who have
provided excellent care to her husband, Jack O. Tomlinson, Sr., in recent
years. The Tomlinsons intend that this scholarship will make a significant
difference for students in need of financial assistance for higher
education. Criteria: admission to or current full-time enrollment in study
leading to a degree at the School of Nursing, a cumulative grade point
average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and must demonstrate financial
need as determined by the UAB Office of Financial Aid. Preference will be
given to those who have demonstrated an interest in cardiovascular nursing.

Governors Lurleen B. and George C. Wallace Memorial Fund
–
Established by Mr. and Mrs. James T. Parsons to honor Mrs. Parsons’ parents,
Governor Lurleen Burns Wallace and Governor George Corley Wallace. Gov.
Lurleen Wallace respected and admired the work of nurses, and Gov. George
Wallace was a strong supporter of UAB and provided significant support
through funding and legislation. This fund is used for scholarships and
many other worthy purposes within the University of Alabama School of
Nursing at UAB. Criteria: to be reviewed and established on a yearly

Lettie
Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholarship - Several nursing scholarships are
provided to undergraduate students each year through funds provided by this
foundation. Financial need is the primary prerequisite. Contact the UAB
Financial Aid Office for information concerning these scholarships.
Additional Scholarship Opportunities
Air
Force ROTC Nurse Scholarship
- Air Force ROTC two and three year nursing
scholarships. These scholarships pay tuition, fees, textbook reimbursement,
and a $100 monthly allowance. Active duty obligation is four years upon

Alabama State Nursing Scholarship
- This $600 scholarship is available only to
Alabama residents who have been admitted to and are currently attending
clinical nursing courses with a 2.5 grade point average or higher in the
School of Nursing undergraduate program. A student receiving these funds
must plan to work within the state of Alabama for at least one year
immediately after graduation. If the student does not work within the
state, these funds become a loan and must be repaid. The UAB Financial Aid
Office administers this scholarship.
Brookwood Medical Center Scholarship - Brookwood offers undergraduate and graduate
scholarships to nursing students enrolled in accredited nursing schools who
meet the following criteria: overall “B” average (3.0 on 4.0 scale), a “B”
in nursing courses, member of Association of Nursing Students preferred,
and recommendation from faculty advisor and Financial Aid Office. A
contract must be signed by the scholarship recipient, which obligates
him/her to work full-time at Brookwood Medical Center immediately after
graduation for one or two years depending on the length of time the
recipient was supported by Brookwood Medical Center. Applications are

Eastern Health Systems, Inc. Loan Scholarship (Medical Center East)
- Eastern Health Systems, Inc. offers scholarship amounts of $2,500 per
academic year for a maximum of four (4) years. Scholarships will be granted
to students pursuing a career in nursing who meet the following criteria:
Acceptance to the School of Nursing, a "B" average in most recently
completed education and acceptance by a selection committee. A grade point
average of at least a "C" must be maintained to remain in the program. To
apply, an applicant must provide a completed application, letters of
recommendation, transcripts and other necessary information as may be needed
by the selection committee. An agreement to work one year for each year of
monies provided will be required to be signed after acceptance and before

Army
ROTC Scholarship - Army ROTC nurse scholarships are offered for four, three, and
two years on a competitive basis. Each scholarship pays full tuition and
required educational fees up to $17,000 per year, $600 for textbooks, and a
monthly stipend, currently $250 for every year the scholarship is in
effect. All three and four year scholarships will also receive an incentive
of $1,000 yearly for every year the scholarship is in effect. Special
consideration for an Army ROTC scholarship is given to students pursuing

Sigma
Theta Tau Scholarship - Up to a total amount of $1,500 each year is available for
full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are in good standing.
Preference will be given to active Sigma Theta Tau International members.
However, membership in Sigma Theta Tau International is not a requirement. A
cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 is required, and for graduate
students, a GRE score of 1,000 (Quantitative and Verbal) if required for
admission, is highly desired. Scholarship period is September 1 to August
31.
Other Sources of Financial Aid
Alabama
State Nurses’ Association Educational Loan - Educational loans are available to registered nurses who are
members of ASNA and are working to complete advanced nursing programs either
full-time or part-time. The applicant must presently be enrolled or
accepted in good standing into an Alabama-approved school of nursing. ASNA
membership is required until the loan is repaid. Contact local ASNA chapter
president for additional information.
Army
Student Nurse Program - A student who has completed the second year may enlist
voluntarily in the Women’s Army Corps Reserve and continue her education for
a period not to exceed 24 months. The selectee will be placed in pay grade
E-3 and will receive full pay and allowances. In addition, tuition, fees,
and books will be paid by the Department of the Army. Six months prior to
graduation, the student will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army
Nurse Corps. Selectees are required to serve on active duty 24 months after
graduation, if participation in the program was 12 months or less. If two
years’ support has been given, the selectee serves 36 months on active

Associated Health Professions and Occupations Affiliated Educational
Programs Veterans Administration - Master’s level advanced nurse practitioners trainee support and
nursing administration practicum support. Funds are provided for student
support for the clinical practicum experience at the VA Medical Centers for
students enrolled in the master’s level clinical nurse specialty areas in
Geriatrics, Rehabilitation, Critical Care, and Psychiatric-Mental Health and
for students enrolled in the master’s level Nursing Administration Practicum

College Work Study Program (CWSP) - This program provides part-time employment for
students. Students usually work 10 to 20 hours per week at the prevailing
federal minimum wage of $6.00-$7.50 per hour. Eligibility is based on need
and determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information
from the student’s completed file. (Each recipient is required to attend
the CWSP seminar held each fall.) This program is available to both
undergraduate and graduate students.
Federal Direct Stafford Loan (7% - 9%)
- This is a long-term loan, which UAB initially recommends and for which the
Federal Government provides funds. The loan rate varies from 7-9 percent
depending upon when the loan is first received. Like the Perkins Loans, the
Federal Direct Stafford Loan is repayable 6 months after the student ceases
to be enrolled at least half time. The maximum amount one can borrow is
$5500 for undergraduates and non-degree graduates and $8500 for graduates.
This loan requires a separate application in addition to the need analysis
document (FAF/FFS), which may be obtained from the UAB Office of Student
Financial Aid.

Graduate Assistantship - A Graduate Assistantship position is available through the
office of the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. This assistantship
provides for an annual stipend of $6,760 and eligibility for in-state
tuition. In addition, Graduate Assistants who are nursing graduate students
may be eligible to receive support for their tuition and fees through a
Professional Nurse Traineeship. The payment for services is taxable.

Jefferson
County Medical Auxiliary Loan - Criteria: enrolled or accepted for enrollment in the
University of Alabama School of Nursing, University of Alabama at
Birmingham, have intent to practice nursing in the State of Alabama after
graduation, and have financial need. Preference will be given to
applicant(s) with upper level status. Application deadline is April 1st
and notification of award by June 1st. The rate of interest is
6%. Repayment is expected to begin nine months after graduation or
withdrawal from the School of Nursing in equal monthly payments. Full
repayment must be made within three years. Contact UAB Financial Aid Office

MCH
Traineeships –
For master students enrolled in Pediatric Pulmonary or
Developmental Disabilities options. The amount of the traineeship varies
from year to year and depends on the availability of funding. Contact

National Health Service Corps - The National Health Service Corps provides for two types
of financial assistance; scholarships and loan repayment programs. Only
students who plan to enroll in the master’s options for Nurse Practitioners
or Nurse Midwives are eligible for these programs. Students are encouraged
to investigate these options prior to admission to the master’s program.

Navy
Nurse Corps Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program
- A
BSN student who has completed the second year may enlist voluntarily in the
Naval Reserve, as Officer Candidates Under Instruction and continue his/her
education for a period not to exceed 24 months. Qualified candidates
receive full pay and allowances of an E-3 (approximately $1,200/month) for
up to 24 months of full-time education. Upon graduation, the student will
be commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps, and will be obligated
to serve for 4 years active duty service. For more information, contact your

NIH
Traineeships - Professional Nurse Traineeships, Division of Nursing, HHS
provides awards for payment of tuition and fees for students enrolled
full-time. Submission of an application for traineeship upon admission to
the School of Nursing, and annually thereafter, will place a student in a
prioritized application pool. Notices of awards and non-awards are made
annually during the summer.
Nurses’ Educational Funds, Inc. - Scholarships in the amount of $2,500-$10,000
are available to master’s and doctoral degree students from the NEF. For an
application, write: Nurses Educational Funds, 555 West 57th
Street, New York, New York 10019. Deadline is March 1st of each
year, and awards are announced in May.
Parents Loan For Undergraduate Students (PLUS) - This is a long-term loan available to
parents of dependent students or to independent students at any income
level. UAB recommends the loan and a bank, credit union or savings and loan
will provide the funds. The maximum amount one can borrow is $3000. This
loan requires a separate application, which may be obtained from the UAB
Office of Student Financial Aid.
Pell
Grant
- This grant ranges from approximately $400 to $3000 (1998-1999) for a
9-month period and is available only to undergraduate students who have not
received a baccalaureate degree. Eligibility is determined by use of a
national formula. Must be enrolled at least half time and grant is usually
limited to five full years of study.
Perkins Loans
- This is a long term, low interest loan which is repayable 6 months after
the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. There is no payment
of principal or interest during periods of at least half-time enrollment.
Eligibility is based on need and is determined by the UAB Office of Student
Financial Aid using information from the student’s completed file. This
program is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

This grant at UAB is for a maximum of $1500 per academic year. Eligibility
is determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information
from the student’s completed file. This grant is available to full-time
undergraduate students only.
University
of Alabama School of Nursing, University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate
Fellowships
– Available to doctoral students each fellowship provides for payment of an
annual stipend of approximately $11,000. Only full-time doctoral students
admitted to the Graduate School are eligible. The fellowship requires a
commitment of working with a faculty mentor on the faculty’s program of
research. Applications are available from the Doctoral Program Directors
office. Applications are received throughout the year and appointments are
awarded for each subsequent academic year during the summer term. For more
