It’s time to set alarms and fight sleep in Sterne Library while writing papers and cramming for exams. Time to get phone numbers from classmates and then only text them for notes. When I’m not studying this year though, I will likely be at a Blazer basketball game. The men finished last season with 26 wins and only seven losses. This will be the first year for the team under the leadership of Head Coach Robert Ehsan after Jerod Haase left for Stanford. Although I will probably be in the crowd or in front of the television for every game, here are the games I’m most excited about this year:

On Monday, Aug. 29, the first day of classes for the fall semester, the UAB football team took to the field for its first official scrimmage game after the program was cut on Dec. 2, 2014.

After what has been a long and shaky road, support for the program was seen in full force on Monday. UAB administration dubbed it a “historic day” for UAB, which began with the official groundbreaking of the new football operations facility at 9 a.m. At 7 p.m. the first official scrimmage of the year kicked off. An estimated 4,500 people, including nearly 2,000 students, attended the game at the BBVA Compass soccer complex.

The year 2014 was supposed to be one of promise for the Blazers.

A coach named Bill Clark came to Birmingham with an 11-4 record during his career at Jacksonville State University and led the Blazers to a 6-6 record, making the team bowl eligible for the first time since 2004. Then the football, bowling and rifle programs were shut down that December, and questions began to arise about what would happen to the athletics department. Would UAB have to leave Conference-USA? How would this affect student tuition and enrollment? Men’s basketball under then head coach Jerod Haase had just finished 2014 with a record of 4-9, and the aura around campus was somber.

While not every student can qualify for university-sanctioned sports, intramural sports offer a chance for individuals to get involved in competitive programs, with or without prior experience and regardless of gender. With registration for the fall sports starting on Sept. 8 and with enrollment for the flag football league opening that day, students may find themselves interested in or curious about what intramural sports have to offer.

The Blazers have not taken the field for an official football game in over a year. Despite the lack of game play, the recently reinstated program is continuing to move forward with the planning stages of the future football operations building.

In early February, the Board of Trustees approved plans for the first two stages of the design and construction of the new football facility. Now, it is approximately a year from the estimated completion date and the team’s return to competition. Here’s what you need to know about the new space:
