Information for Incoming International Exchange Students
If you are a degree-seeking student at one of UAB’s international reciprocal student exchange partner universities or a National Student Exchange member university, you are eligible to apply to attend UAB as an exchange student. Follow the steps below in order to become a Blazer!
Step 1: Apply at your home campusBegin by asking your home campus study abroad/student exchange office for a student exchange application. Spaces are limited, so your home campus will need to select you as an eligible exchange student.
Step 2: Have your home campus notify the UAB Office of Study AwayAfter you’ve been accepted as an exchange student by your home campus, have your home campus study abroad/student exchange office email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 3: Apply to UABApply online to UAB as a transient student. A transient student is someone attending UAB for just a semester or two, rather than being a degree-seeking student. You must have completed steps 1 and 2 above prior to applying to UAB. Step 4: Submit your supporting documentsAfter you have completed your online application, gather these supporting documents: transcripts from previous universities attended, letter of good standing from your current university, proof of language proficiency (international students only), and affidavit of financial support (international students only). Step 5: Register your BlazerIDOnce you have been admitted and have received your student number, you’ll need a BlazerID, your computer login name. Register your new BlazerID using convenient online self-service. If you have questions about your BlazerID, email UAB Information Technology Services at email@example.com.
Step 6: Apply for housingApply online for housing. If you have questions regarding housing, email UAB Housing and Residence life at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 7: Pick out your classesWith your academic advisor at your home university, pick out UAB classes you’re interested in taking using the online UAB class schedule listing. Have your home university academic advisor fill out and email the exchange student course selection form to email@example.com.
Step 8: Satisfy mandatory health insurance requirementsSatisfy mandatory health insurance requirements by signing up for insurance or submitting a waiver. If you have questions regarding health insurance, email UAB Student Health Services Insurance Coordinator Candace Ragsdale at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 9: Submit your student visaSubmit your student visa (international students only) to UAB International Recruitment and Student Services by emailing Assistant Director of International Recruitment Stacey Fraser Thompson at email@example.com.
Step 10: Register for classesRegister for classes using the BlazerNET online self-service system during open registration for non-degree seeking students. Do not wait until you arrive in Birmingham to register because classes do fill up early. If you have any questions regarding registration, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 11: Satisfy medical clearanceSatisfy medical clearance requirements, such as providing proof of immunizations, for international students or domestic students. If you have questions regarding medical clearance, international students email UAB International Recruitment and Student Services Assistant Director of International Recruitment Stacey Fraser Thompson at email@example.com and domestic students email UAB Student Health Services Medical Clearance Coordinator Jenna Hammer at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 12: Plan your arrivalSign up for orientation and airport pickup by emailing by emailing UAB International Recruitment and Student Services Assistant Director of International Recruitment Stacey Fraser Thompson at email@example.com.
Book your flight to land at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) on the move-in date for student housing. The move-in date will be several days before classes begin. If you have questions about move-in, contact UAB Housing and Residence Life at firstname.lastname@example.org.
