Experts recommend two hours of studying for every hour spent in class. Doctors recommend eight hours of sleep a night. That leaves 67 hours to sit around and get bored—or to get out and do something exciting and entertaining with UAB’s student activities and organizations.
Do you have a message you want to get out? Do people want to listen? UAB’s student-run media—the Kaleidoscope newspaper, the Aura literary arts review, BlazeRadio, and Inside UAB and UAB TV are all opportunities to engage with your fellow students, shore up your resume, exercise your talents, and even air an opinion or two.
There’s school spirit, and then there’s putting-on-a-uniform-and-making-some-noise school spirit. The UAB Marching Blazers band, cheerleaders, Golden Girls dance team, and Blazer Pep Band—and our costumed mascot—get and keep the crowd pumped all through the game at UAB sporting events. (It’s a dragon. That’s right, a dragon. You got a problem with that?)
Networking. Leadership. Service. Lifelong friendships. Secret handshakes. (We’re pretty sure about that last one.) UAB’s 17 sororities and fraternities bring students together to enhance their education, give back to the community with donations and service, form strong and lasting bonds, and share both academic and life lessons. And they also have some of the best floats in the Homecoming parade.
Interfraternity Council: Delta Sigma Phi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon
National Pan-Hellenic Council: Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, Zeta Phi Beta
Panhellenic Council: Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Gamma
Multicultural Organizations: Beta Chi Theta Fraternity, Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority
Be a leader. Be a joiner. Just be involved. UAB offers so many opportunities for interaction that your only real excuse is shyness, and you’re not going to overcome that sitting alone in your room. (But if you’ve really got a bad case of it, our recommendation is that you audition to wear the Blaze costume. You’re out and about, but no one knows it’s you.) B-Sync is your connection to UAB’s student organizations—and, by extension, to UAB’s students. Take the opportunity to make life more enriching, interesting, beautiful, and/or just plain fun for your fellow students and the world around you.
Find a Student Org for You
You ham, you. You lover of the limelight, you. You backstage support staff without whom the show could not go on, you.
Showcase your talents for an adoring crowd in one of UAB’s many performance groups. In addition to the Marching Blazers and the pep band, UAB’s wind symphony and symphony band perform for adoring audiences on campus and at festivals—and are open to non-music majors. Groups like the computer music ensemble, the gospel choir, chamber singers, jazz combo, and plenty more leave lots of opportunity to explore a wide range of musical talents. And Theatre UAB plays to packed houses with classic plays, modern interpretations, and world premieres of student work. You’re a star—get on out there and twinkle.

It’s not just about you. But then, you probably already knew that. You’re probably already hunting down ways to get out in the community, give back, and make a lasting mark on the world. So are UAB Civic Engagement and the Leadership and Service Council. They’re your way to hook up with like-minded students to get out and do some good—the biannual Into the Streets community outreach day, Alternative Spring Break, summer service weekends, civic engagement fairs—and volunteer opportunities even outside of a formal campaign. Because needs in the community don’t always wait for an Awareness Month, and neither do you.
