The hospitals and health centers of Huntsville provide in-patient and ambulatory experience to medical students through the University of Alabama School of Medicine-Huntsville Program and the Huntsville Family Practice Residency Program. Huntsville Hospital and Huntsville Hospital East with 901 beds combined, is a publicly owned general hospital. This is the major training site for core clerkships, as well as many electives. The complete in-patient portions of the junior clerkships in internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology are based in these facilities, as is a major portion of the surgery clerkship. The main facility is physically connected to the School’s Clinical Science Center, which houses the medical library, call rooms, and Student Lounge. Columbia Medical Center of Huntsville (120 beds) provides additional access to Huntsville's private patients for the surgery clerkship and for additional inpatient electives. Fox Army Health Center (Redstone Arsenal) provides opportunity for exposure to general medical, surgical short-term acute care and managed care medicine. Outpatient experience is provided in the private offices of many of Huntsville’s 400+ physicians, in the UAB Health Center Huntsville and a wide range of community health care facilities.
