Alabama Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMS)
Director: Ronald Clements, MD
Established:
2001
The mission of the Alabama Institute for Minimally Invasive
Surgery (AIMS) is to provide outstanding patient care, as well as comprehensive
training and research opportunities for surgeons in every specialty. The goals for AIMS are to coordinate the
educational and research efforts related to minimally invasive surgery at UAB
and to encourage excellence and innovation in this rapidly expanding field.
Training
A component of AIMS is a continuing education conference
facility to train community physicians and residents in new techniques. It will include a telecommunications center,
which will allow connection to
locations throughout the world.
Physicians will be able to observe operations performed at remote
locations and to broadcast procedures performed at UAB. In addition, AIMS will enhance the training
of resident surgeons. A one-year
post-residency fellowship in laparoscopic gastrointestinal and abdominal
surgery will train surgeons in the latest minimally invasive techniques and to
prepare them to train others in their application. Future plans include the creation of minimally invasive fellowships in other
surgical subspecialties.
