Established:  1987

Mission and Demographics

The mission of the UAB Center for Economic Education is to advance economic literacy in the Greater Birmingham area and Central Alabama primarily by providing programs in economic education for public and private teachers in K-12 instruction.  The Center, one of two university-based centers in the state, operates in conjunction with the Alabama Council on Economic Education (ACEE) and is accredited through the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE).  The UAB Center is part of the national network of university-based centers for economic education serving all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  It currently has one appointed faculty representing the Department of Finance, Economics, and Quantitative Methods in the UAB School of Business.

Center Activity

The Center for Economic Education provides programs through in-service teacher education workshops and seminars sponsored by NCEE and the UAB in-service center.  Teachers receive continuing education credits for completed workshops.  The Center is also responsible for pre-service teacher education, materials and curriculum development, and research and adult education related to economic education as available funding permits.

In addition, the Center also coordinates and hosts the annual Alabama State Economics Challenge, a statewide quiz-bowl style competition for 12th grade students and teachers which is held on campus.  Winners receive prizes and the right to advance to the regional competition.  The 2008 Alabama Economics Challenge event attracted 20 teams, each comprised of four students and a teacher/coach.

Finally, the Center coordinates the Alabama Stock Market Simulation for K-12 student teams each fall and spring semester.  Winners receive prizes for first, second, and third place rankings.

Center programs have reached over 2,000 teachers in the Greater Birmingham and Central Alabama area over the past 15 years.
