Mission
The multi-school, multi-departmental Heflin Center for Human Genetics was established
to serve as a centerpiece of the UAB Genetics Initiative. The mission of the
Center is to bring together the UAB community of genetic investigators and to
develop a robust technologic infrastructure to support genetic and genomic research
at UAB.
Center Research
Housed in the Kaul Human Genetics Building, the Genomics Core has established
three high-priority technological resources: 1) microarray analyses on multiple
levels (expression, gene dosage and methylation profiling), 2) high-throughput
sequencing, and 3) high-throughput genotyping, including single nucleotide polymorphisms
(SNPs). Data management is supported by the UAB Molecular and Genetic Bioinformatics
Facility (MGBF), which has been incorporated into the Center, and statistical
support is provided through a collaborative arrangement with the Section on
Statistical Genetics in the Department of Biostatistics.
Jan Dumanski, PhD (Department
of Genetics) serves as Director of the Heflin Center. Michael Crowley, PhD is
Director of the Center's Genomics Core and is responsible for overseeing the
development of the technologic infrastructure and its day-to-day operations.
Education and Training
Activities
The Genetics and Genomics Research seminar series, the Mouse Genomics Working
Group, the Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) Study Group and targeted educational
workshops (e.g., Statistical Genetics for the Biomedical Investigator) provide
opportunities for learning and collaborations within the Center.
