The mission of the Center for Labor Education and Research
(CLEAR) is to provide university-level education programs for workers and their
representatives in
Center
Projects
CLEAR designs and presents university-level education
programs for workers and union representatives at the local, state, and
international levels. Traditional labor
education topics are taught, including labor and employment law, labor economics, labor
history, legal rights and responsibilities, grievance handling
and arbitration, collective bargaining, steward training, leadership and
communication skills, and health and safety.
Each class provides the information and
skills workers and their representatives need to more effectively represent
their interests. Classes are tailored to meet
the needs of each group.
CLEAR’s faculty have research expertise in
labor history, labor and civil rights, work and family issues, and contract
administration. The Center also has a
web page that contains articles of interest to workers. The web page contains CLEAR’s
Clearinghouse for Immigrant Workers, a compendium of sites useful for immigrant
workers, unions that represent them, and employers.
The Center’s Workplace Safety Training program is committed
to advancing the health and safety of workers.
A range of training opportunities is offered for unions, agencies, and
industries where workers may be exposed to hazardous substances and other
unsafe conditions. Workplace Safety
Training offers grant-funded programs for firefighters, public and community
officials, Native American tribal leaders, and workers in the
telecommunications industry. It also
offers hazmat and confined space rescue training to other audiences on a
contract basis.
