Mission and Demographics

The Comprehensive Stroke Center is an interdisciplinary program specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of stroke and stroke-related disorders.  Its mission is to provide comprehensive clinical care through prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of stroke victims.

Center Activity 

The Center supports an inpatient service which is dedicated exclusively to stroke victims and critically ill neurological patients.  The service is staffed by a team of neurologists and nurse specialists in collaboration with consulting emergency medicine physicians, neuro-endovascular specialists, neurocritical intensivists, radiologists, cardiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, sleep medicine and neuro-rehabilitation specialists including nurses and technologists on these diverse services (the UAB Stroke Team).  Outpatient services involve risk stratification and follow-up via the Stroke Outpatient Clinic, a division of The Kirklin Clinic at the UAB Medical Center.  Diagnostic services are provided as well, involving a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of cerebrovascular disorders, including MRI/MRA, CT, SPECT, cerebral catheterization and angiography, and the Neurovascular Ultrasound Laboratory.

Research and Training

The Stroke Center is involved in several investigator-driven, as well as nationally and locally sponsored, clinical research studies for prevention, management and rehabilitation of stroke patients funded by NIH and industry.  In addition, the Center offers a vascular neurology and neuro-endovascular fellowship training programs for neurologists interested in pursuing a career in Vascular Neurology.

Awards

The Stroke Center’s efficient and effective delivery of comprehensive care was honored with the 2002 Best Practice Award by the Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation for identifying, measuring, optimizing, and monitoring stroke quality indicators at University Hospitals in order to streamline patient selection for appropriate therapies, expedite care of acute stroke victims, and implement appropriate secondary stroke prevention strategies.
