The UAB Comparative Pathology Laboratory supports the Animal Resources
Program diagnostic and health quality assurance programs and assists UAB
investigators in achieving their specialized animal research objectives.
Research Information
The Laboratory is staffed by two board certified veterinary
pathologists. Trenton R. Schoeb, DVM,
PhD, assists investigators needing research-related veterinary pathological
services and M. Margaret Juliana, VMD, PhD, provides pathology review of
diagnostic and health surveillance cases. Technical assistance is provided by two
certified histology technologists and a certified medical technologist. Faculty and staff are available to provide
advice on proper tissue collection and preparation of fixed or frozen samples.
The Comparative Pathology Laboratory is well-equipped to perform
necropsy, histology (paraffin embedding and frozen sections), microbiology, parasitology, clinical pathology, and hematology procedures.
It has modern equipment including an
automated tissue processor, slide and cassette labeler, and stainer; a
cryostat; and hematology and clinical chemistry analyzers. Samples requiring serological or PCR testing
are submitted to an appropriate referral laboratory.
The Laboratory prepares an annual average of about 20,000 histologic
sections, 80%-90% of which are for UAB researchers, and processes about 1,500
health surveillance submissions.

Comparative Pathology Laboratory is supported by a system of uniform charges to
users. Contact the laboratory for
information about specialized services provided and fee schedules. Please note that submissions due
to animal health concerns must be referred by one of the Animal Resources
Program clinical veterinarians.
