Research Training and Career Development Core

Director:  Cheryl Perry, PhD

Department/Center Association:  School of Medicine

Established:  2002

Mission

The Office of Program Planning and Educational Research (OPPER) has established a centralized service to foster career development among postdoctoral researchers, clinical fellows, and junior faculty in the School of Medicine by providing technical grant-writing support and by making them aware of submission requirements for extramural grant applications.  Intended to increase the number of young investigators who submit high-quality proposals, the Research Training and Career Development Core provides services to both clinical and basic science researchers.  Its focus is on individual (e.g., K23, F32) and institutional (e.g., T32, K12) training grant applications.

Services

The Core’s main objective is to work with applicants and their mentors on individual training grants and with the principal investigator on institutional applications to assist with their preparation and critique.  To accomplish this, personnel in the Core assist with the framing and organization of ideas, ensure that aims and timelines are appropriate, identify requirements that are covered inadequately or are missing, and provide editing.  In addition, the Core also gathers and shares information on the institutional environment and resources, and on responsible conduct of research offerings.
