The Scientific Writing Seminar Series (SWSS)

Sponsored by the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, the SWSS was designed to provide practical assistance in three areas:

 1) the development of scientific manuscripts, 2) grants, and 3) scientific presentations.

Developing Scientific Manuscripts

The goal of this two-session series is to develop practical skills for writing a scientific, peer-reviewed article.  Information will include introductory material on types of scientific writing, where to submit articles, the elements of a journal article, and how to respond to critiques and correspond with editors. Developing Extramural Applications

The goal of this five-session series is to develop practical skills for writing and revising extramural applications, especially NIH career development awards.  Information will include planning and assessing readiness, creating career development and research plans, handling regulatory issues, responding to pink sheets, and avoiding common mistakes. (10 hours total)

Developing Scientific Presentations

The goal of this session is to develop practical skills for preparing and conducting scientific poster, platform and panel presentations.  Information will include poster design, handout development, presentation organization, verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, use of media, and tips on audience interaction.
