The Scientific Writing Seminar
Series (SWSS)
Sponsored by the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, the SWSS was designed to provide practical
assistance in three areas:
1) the development of scientific manuscripts,
2) grants, and 3) scientific presentations.
Developing Scientific Manuscripts
The goal of this two-session
series is to develop practical skills for writing a scientific, peer-reviewed
article. Information will include
introductory material on types of scientific writing, where to submit articles,
the elements of a journal article, and how to respond to critiques and
correspond with editors. (3 hours total)
Developing Extramural Applications
The
goal of this five-session series is to develop practical skills for writing and
revising extramural applications, especially NIH career development
awards. Information will include
planning and assessing readiness, creating career development and research
plans, handling regulatory issues, responding to pink sheets, and avoiding
common mistakes. (10 hours total)
Developing Scientific Presentations
The goal of this session is
to develop practical skills for preparing and conducting scientific poster, platform
and panel presentations. Information
will include poster design, handout development, presentation organization,
verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, use of media, and tips on audience
interaction. (2 hours total)
