2018 Build

In 2018, the Benevolent Fund was excited to build for Ames Farrell. Ames has lived in Birmingham all of his life, graduating with an Advanced Diploma from Shades Mountain Christian High School and attending UAB. He is self-employed, running “Ames Works” throughout the year. He specializes in yard work, chores, and basic handyman jobs. When not working, Ames enjoys watching detective shows. He also enjoys running, generally putting in 6-18 miles each week, depending on his schedule. He attends Canvas Church in Vestavia.

Ames believes owning a home will help him because he will have his own place for the future, be able to give him more room to live and to store his tools, and help him to fulfill a life-long dream. When asked what he would like to say to those who have helped to make his home possible, he responded, “I believe that it is a greater blessing to give than to receive. I hope that you can get a double blessing from working with me... Thank you for volunteering."

2017 Build

Thank you to all who participated in our 2017 build! We were excited to build in Wylam for Ms. Tiffany Wells and baby Morgan. Ms. Wells is Bessemer native and a Miles College graduate. “Owning my own home will allow me the chance to raise my son in a positive and safe environment,” says Tiffany, “I just want to say that I am more than grateful for this wonderful opportunity. Over 675 UAB employees gave their time to build for Ms. Wells. The build concluded November 10th, with the official dedication taking place on the 15th. “To UAB employees, thank you,” said Tiffany. “Thank you so much from me and from Morgan, too. You have blessed me. I’ve never seen people give that much time and energy to anything as they did to building this home. That was a first for me, and it has changed my life because now I want to be like them, and I want to give like them and help people just like they have done for me.”  To see the build in its entirety and to view photos from the dedication be sure to visit our Flickr page, linked above.

2014 Build

425 UAB employees and students contributed over 2,000 volunteer hours during our first ever UAB Habitat House build! On November 10, 2014, La’Tasha Willis and her daughters, Lyric and Alexis, received the keys to their new house in the Pratt City community of Birmingham. It was a joy to see students, faculty, staff, and homeowners all working together toward the common goal of decent, affordable housing for our community and an event that sparked a now annual tradition at UAB!
