Sarika Patel, UAB Collat School of Business accounting student, was recently awarded a $10,000 scholarship by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). The PCAOB awards merit scholarships on an annual basis to outstanding accounting students enrolled in an accounting degree program at accredited U.S. colleges or universities.
Sarika completed her undergraduate degree in accounting at UAB in 3 years and went straight into UAB’s Master of Accounting program this summer.
“Going into the UAB Master of Accounting Program, my number one concern was paying for my degree,” says Sarika. “This scholarship from the PCAOB will be a tremendous aid in helping me to pay for college without taking out any student loans. “
Funds for the PCAOB scholarship program are generated from the collection of monetary penalties imposed by the PCAOB as provided in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act established in 2002. The goal of the PCAOB scholarship program is to encourage outstanding accounting students to pursue a career in auditing.
“After completing my audit internship with Deloitte, I feel like my passion lies in tax,” says Sarika. “While completing the Mater of Accounting Program, I will also be sitting for the CPA exams and am hoping to pass all 4 exams by the time I start with a company. After getting a few years of experience in tax accounting, I would like to go private and work with a smaller, local accounting firm in hopes of buying into a firm as a partner or starting my own practice.“
