Collat School of Business Finance Professor Stephanie Yates, Ph.D., was recently awarded the 2016 President’s Award for Diversity from UAB’s Vice President for Equity and the Office of the Vice Provost for Student and Faculty Success. The annual award is given to outstanding faculty, staff and students for their achievements towards a more inclusive, diverse and competent university community. Award criteria include significance, implementation and impact of community service.
Yates has utilized her position as the director of the Regions Institute for Financial Education, an endowed program that provides financial education to students, faculty and the community, to provide financial education to more than 10,000 students in 72 schools and in 19 school districts across Alabama.
Dean Eric Jack strongly supports Yates’s dedication to advancing academia, noting her “groundbreaking spirit in developing and managing financial literacy programs that positively impact communities across Alabama.”
In her time serving as director, Yates has partnered with the UAB School of Education, Jefferson County Workforce Development, Alabama Securities Commission, State Department of Education, Alabama and America Saves, and others to engage business school and faculty in providing financial literacy to low-income Alabama residents.
Arline Savage, Ph.D., chair of Collat’s Department of Accounting and Finance nominated Yates for the award. Savage believes Yates has “significantly exceeded expectations” by engaging the community through free financial education to help alleviate the inequality of education in the Birmingham community.
Yates received the award at a special ceremony at the UAB National Alumni House on January 28, 2016.
