Barbara WechCollat management professor Barbara Wech, Ph.D., has been awarded the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) ambassador designation.

This designation is awarded to faculty and staff who have completed the university’s full DEI Education curriculum, which includes five classes: Awareness @ UAB, Cultural Awareness Building Blocks, Safe Zone Training, Unconscious Bias and Bystander Intervention.

Wech joins more than 50 DEI Education Ambassadors representing various schools, units and departments across UAB and the UAB Health system. The DEI Education program, which began in July 2019, enables faculty and staff across UAB and the UAB Health System to play an integral role in establishing inclusive excellence by championing the equity of all faculty, staff and students.

“This training, which is available to all UAB employees, helps me as the CSOB equity advisor increase my understanding of the complexities of diversity, become more culturally aware of the challenges of marginalized people, understand how biases impact decisions and interactions, and how to recognize and intervene when harassing and discriminatory behaviors occur,” says Wech.

As ambassador, Wech will bring the UAB shared value of diversity and inclusiveness to life. Wech also has the unique opportunity to become a DEI Education facilitator, teaching diversity education within Collat and other areas of the university and Health System.

All UAB employees are encouraged to complete the Diversity Education courses to become university diversity ambassadors. To learn more about the DEI Education offerings, visit uab.edu/dei/diversity-education.
