In its seventh year, “Strategic Management, Conversations with CEOs,” the unique and popular approach to learning strategic management, kicks off this fall with a visit from one of the pioneers of the UAB School of Business.
Strategic Management, Conversations with CEOs,” a combined capstone undergraduate and graduate class on strategic management, brings CEOs of public or large private companies to meet with students over the course of the semester to discuss their companies’ strategies for achieving sustainable competitive advantages in their respective industries. Assistant Professors Eddie Friend and Stephen Yoder teach the course and have 11 CEOs schedule for the fall 2011 course offering.
Professor of Management and University Scholar Emeritus Jack Duncan was the first to visit on August 30th. Dr. Duncan was one of the pioneers of the UAB School of Business, arriving at the school in 1972 just one year after its founding as a school within the University. Over the course of his career he was a department chair, associate dean for graduate programs and interim dean. More recently, he helped launch the Healthcare Leadership Academy, a joint venture in leadership development for health care professionals, sponsored by the School of Business and the UAB School of Medicine.
Professor Duncan is the author or co-author of 16 books and numerous scholarly articles. He is the co-author of Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations (Blackwell Publishing) which is in its sixth edition and is the best selling textbook in this area. He is also one of only about 160 Fellows world-wide in the International Academy of Management. Other IAM Fellows include well-known management experts Michael Porter (about whom Duncan spoke to students during class) and Warren Bennis.
