Beattie_PictureUAB School of Business alumnus, and current Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Southern Company, Art P. Beattie, met with School of Business Honors Program students on Monday, February 20, 2012 to discuss team leadership.

Beattie has spent his entire professional career with Southern Company and its affiliates. Prior to assuming his current position at the Atlanta headquarters of this public utility holding company, Beattie rose through the ranks at Alabama Power Company with service as corporate secretary, controller and chief financial officer.

Beattie described to students how he has handled a variety of team leadership situations, including one experience writing a rap song as a team-building exercise.

In addition to discussing teams, Beattie also offered students career advice, noting that often a first professional job is not the ideal job. He told students to take the long view in such situations, because a first job can lead to much better things.

Beattie spoke to the Class of 2013 cohort of the School of Business Honors Program, which this semester is studying leadership principles and applications with Assistant Professor Stephen A. Yoder, J.D. Two teams of students made presentations during the class time spent with Mr. Beattie, addressing the team leadership lessons of the movies “Miracle” (the true story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic ice hockey team) and “Remember the Titans.”
