MK grad GoodeCollat students are excelling in the classroom and in their careers. By using the world-class education and resources at UAB, they’re securing exciting career opportunities with today’s top businesses.

Shekinah Goode, a graduating senior in the marketing program, landed a full-time marketing position with Birmingham-based Hibbett Sports before graduation. She interned with Hibbett, a leading athletics retailer with more than 1,000 stores nationwide, in May 2017 and was offered the position based on her performance.

Shekinah will serve as a Marketing Coordinator in charge of coordinating creative projects, including social media production, content creation and back-end processes like e-commerce development.

Shekinah played in the UAB Marching Band for five years and served as the secretary for the UAB Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, a national honorary band sorority. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Shekinah says she also worked full-time while pursuing her degree.

Originally an engineering major, Shekinah took a marketing class and fell in love with the consumer-facing end of product development. She enjoys the challenges of uncovering opportunities to sell products and discovering strategies to engage consumers.

Shekinah credits much of her success to the resources and cutting-edge education she received at the Collat School of Business. Professors and advisors in the program took time to understand her career goals and helped her succeed in and out of the classroom, she says. Marketing professor Mickey Bunn, Ph.D., mentored Shekinah throughout her time at UAB.

Shekinah says classes in business development and information systems rounded out her business degree to where she feels well prepared with the skills necessary to tackle her new job.

For incoming students, Shekinah recommends reaching out to advisors and professors and making connections. She says it is important to be confident, get involved, network and use all the available resources, including resume-building workshops and employer events.

“Take advantage of every resource that the school has, because they’re top notch and available to every student.”
