Hibbett_Group_PictureSenior management executives from Hibbett Sports demonstrated to students in the combined undergraduate capstone and MBA class, “Strategic Management: Conversations With CEOs,” that a successful business strategy is built on all of the business disciplines.

CEO Jeffry Rosenthal and director of internal controls Rolanda Waddell described the company’s approaches to merchandising, advertising information technology, financial disclosure, supply chain management, facilities planning and various other functions that must be coordinated to implement a winning strategy.

Rosenthal told students that the company’s approach to advertising, for example, is to spend relatively little as a percentage of sales but to position stores in shopping areas close to large magnet stores like Walmart Super Centers where customers are sure to see the Hibbett store signs as they walk to and from their cars.

A group of students who had researched Hibbett’s strategy made a presentation to Mr. Rosenthal and Ms. Waddell. The students had visited a Hibbett store and saw the customer focus of the employees first-hand. They also heard that employees wished the in-store music could be changed a bit more frequently!

“Strategic Management: Conversations with CEOs” is taught by Professors Eddie Friend and Stephen Yoder, and features visits from CEOs of public or other large complex organizations who discuss their organizations’ strategies and how they are developed and implemented.
