There is no place that retiring Professor Joe Van Matre, Ph.D., would have wanted to spend his time other than the UAB Collat School of Business.

“There’s a quote from King James I from when he visited Oxford,” Van Matre said. “When he returned to court, he was said to have remarked, ‘If I were not king, I would like to be a university man. Out of all the things I might have been, I’m so happy to say that I’ve spent the last 50 years being a university man.”

Van Matre is one of the first professors hired at the Collat School of Business and is retiring at the end of the Spring 2022 semester, and as the school celebrates its 50th anniversary, he sat down to share some of his experiences throughout the years.
