The UAB Collat School of Business itself is a testament to the generosity of its donors, from being the first named school at UAB, to the tradition-setting Blaze statue, to the world-class facility we now call home. Because of successful alumni, the local business community, and caring employees, the school has been able to grow and prepare our students for success. We thank all of our donors over the last 50 years for your continued support. In honor of our anniversary, we’ve highlighted a few notable gifts that were transformative to the school’s achievement:

1973

Donors Carrie and Don Marshall establish first endowed fund to benefit the school.Carrie & Don Marshall established the first endowed fund to benefit the school. Over the last 50 years, the endowment has grown to more than $3.5 million. Carrie and Don Marshall establish the Marshall Endowment serving as the first endowed fund to benefit the school. It is used at the Dean’s discretion to fund critical needs. Over the last 50 years, the endowment has grown to more than $3.5 million.

1979

The A.G. Gaston Scholarship is created to assist Black students attending the School of Business. It is later endowed and renamed the A.G. Gaston Endowed Memorial Scholarship. 

1986

Joe Van Matre, Ph.D., a quantitative methods professor, establishes the Juanita and William H. Van Matre Scholarship Endowment in honor of his parents. He becomes the first faculty member to endow a scholarship at the business school.

Charles and Patsy Collat, with Mayer Electric Supply Company Foundation and the Alabama Eminent Scholars Trust Fund, give $1 million to establish the Ben S. Weil Endowed Chair of Industrial Distribution, named in honor of Patsy Collat’s late father.

1990

The UAB Alumni and Friends Endowed Professor in Accounting is established.

2000

Marion C. Breyer establishes the John F. Breyer Endowed Scholarship in memory of her late husband. Upon her passing in 2011, Mrs. Breyer bequeathed $900,000 to the endowment making it one of the largest scholarship endowments at the school.

2007

Charles and Patsy Collat give $1 million to establish the Charles and Patsy Collat Industrial Distribution Program

2008-2020

Duane and Amy Donner make multiple contributions totaling more than $925,000 to establish and run the Healthcare Leadership Academy, a training program for UAB healthcare professionals jointly produced by the Heersink School of Medicine and the Collat School of Business.

2011

Wells Fargo Endowed Chair in Business Administration established.

2012

Sallie W. Dean Endowed Support Fund for Faculty Excellence in Accounting established.

2013

Charles and Patsy Collat give $25 million to name the Charles and Patsy Collat School of Business, the first named school at UAB. Read more

2014

The Joy and Bill Harbert Foundation, Inc. gives $5 million to name the B.L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, allocating $2 million to build out the institute’s space co-located with the business school in the new Collat School of Business building. Read more

Kassouf & Co. and David Kassouf give $500,000 to new building campaign to name the Kassouf & Co. Suite for the Department of Accounting & Finance.

Medical Properties Trust makes the lead gift of $1 million for the Collat School of Business’s new building, naming the Medical Properties Trust Auditorium and launching an audacious $15 million fundraising campaign. Read more

Kate & Claude Nielsen give $500,000 to new building campaign to name the Nielsen Innovation Lab. Read more

Regions Bank gives $2 million to name the Regions Institute for Financial Education (RIFE), creating an endowed program support fund, establishing the Regions Institute for Financial Education Endowed Professorship, and funding space in the new Collat School of Business building to serve as the home for RIFE.

2016

Chad Hagwood becomes first Collat alumnus to give $1 million to the business school naming the Chad Thomas Hagwood Finance Lab and the Dr. Lary B. Cowart Classroom in honor of his mentor and Collat faculty member. Read more

Mayer raises more than $530,000 in in-kind-gifts of electrical products to be used in the new Collat School of Business building.

2016-2017

Medical Properties Trust gives additional $2 million to the Collat School of Business new building campaign to name the Medical Properties Trust Commons. Read more

2018

Mike and Gillian Goodrich fund the Goodrich Endowed Chair of Innovation and Entrepreneurship to support education and research in innovation and entrepreneurship at the Collat School of Business. Dr. Patrick J. Murphy is named the inaugural Goodrich Endowed Chair.

Ken Jackson commissions and donates a bronze sculpture of UAB mascot Blaze to anchor Blazer Pride Plaza at the main entrance to the new Collat School of Business building. The 8-foot statue is designed and sculpted by Birmingham artist Branko Medenica. Read more

2019

Kate & Claude Nielsen pledge additional $2 million to new building campaign bringing the School well within reach of meeting its $15 million fundraising goal.

2020

Medical Properties Trust gives $1 million to complete the Collat School of Business new building campaign, raising $15 million from alumni, faculty/staff, friends, and corporate partners. It is one of the most successful capital fundraising projects in UAB history.

2021

Charles Collat delivers $15 million check to the business school completing his and late wife Patsy’s $25 million gift to the UAB Collat School of Business. Read more

Medical Properties Trust Entrepreneurship Scholars Endowment supported by Melinda and Edward K. Aldag, Jr. is established through a $1 million gift from MPT and the Aldags. Read more
