Margaret’s duties at Habitat for Humanity mirror her marketing major: she visits build sites, takes pictures of the families and volunteers and then posts on the Habitat blog, Twitter, and Facebook. “It has been an incredible experience because I have been able to see first-hand how nonprofits connect with their volunteers through social media and events such as BBQ for Building and Building on Faith,” says Margaret.
Margaret’s internship includes a scholarship that was originally funded nearly three years ago after the April 2011 tornadoes that ripped through Birmingham, including many low-to moderate-income neighborhoods. Several anonymous donors wished to help survivors of the tornadoes by providing a service learning opportunity for business students.
Some of the donated funds were lent directly to survivors of the tornadoes in a program administered by students in the months immediately following the storms, including some survivors who are UAB employees. Other funds were donated to Habitat for Humanity which in turn lent them to storm victims and others in need of new homes or home renovations. As those loans have been repaid by the borrowers, the funds are returned to the Collat School of Business and used to fund scholarships for service learning at Habitat.

We were pleased to collaborate with UAB on this new level by providing a learning opportunity for students through a hands-on internship with our Habitat for Humanity.”
