Dr. Burel Goodin

I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Samford University in 2019. I am currently working towards my Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I am a part of Dr. Burel Goodin's lab as a Graduate Student Trainee. Overall, my program of research investigates the impact of insomnia on pain, physical function, and inflammation in PLWH. My focus is examining the extent of mitochondrial DNA depletion and damage in PLWH and its association with their ratings of pain and fatigue in everyday life, along with hypersensitivity and endogenous pain modulatory balance in response to QST. My long term goals are 1) determine whether PLWH demonstrate greater mtDNA depletion and greater mitochondrial DAMPs compared to individuals without HIV and 2) examine the extent to which mtDNA depletion and DAMPs accounts for pain and fatigue severity ratings, as well as pain hypersensitivity in response to QST, in PLWH.
