Journalism — as a craft — is an amazing pursuit governed by a fascinating array of customs, ethical norms, and democratic traditions, and I am passionate about both its creation and its regulation — and the regulation of speech generally. I want to tell creative, engaging stories and help others do the same; I also want to help students better understand the cost of free speech in a democracy.

I live with my wife in my hometown of Moundville, Alabama, along with too many cats and not enough bottles of fine bourbon.

My current research interest is in the regulation of speech we as a society might find to be harmful or unseemly, such as racially offensive epithets and fact-free conspiracy theories, and some of my past work has looked at the unique problem of regulating violent student speech. My professional interests include feature and entertainment writing.
