Daily Activities

  • On the first day of camp, students meet in the Criminal Justice’s Facebook Teaching Lab and are divided into five four-member teams and given details of their first assignment. Each team is assigned a camp counselor — digital forensics graduate students. Counselors supervise the campers, but the campers do all the work!
  • Each day begins with staff (graduate students and digital forensics/criminal justice faculty) presentation to the teams of background on the case for the day; each team is assigned a case and will be taught how to research needed evidence. Staff will assess students’ core knowledge of the subject matter for the day (phishing, hacking, malware, etc.) by asking the group questions and engaging them in dialogue about the topic.
  • Each team will process the crime, potential crime, or threat of crime. Staff will assign specific roles for each team member as they gather evidence and assess potential threats.
  • For the remainder of the week, students analyze evidence in the cybercrime lab. Many camp hours will be spent in UAB’s computer science lab located in Campbell Hall room 435. After training and preparation, all team members participate in analyzing the evidence.
  • After the students process the evidence and answer questions from staff about it (in front of the others), staff guide students in the formal development of briefings for law enforcement or corporate entities, just like those done in the real world.
