The Department of English actively participates in several communities: our students, Birmingham residents, and the literary and creative-writing communities at-large. We sponsor ongoing series and workshops as well as participate in student groups and community events. Learn about our ongoing event series below, and check out our event calendar for a comprehensive list of events our faculty and students participate in.

UAB Writers ' Series. The Writers' Series invites nationally recognized authors to UAB to give readings and participate in Q-and-A sessions. Readings are free and open to the public.
Alumni Lecture. Our Alumni Lecture series brings in nationally prominent writers and scholars twice each year to talk about ideas and issues related to the study of English. These lectures are free and open to the public.
Birmingham Institute for Teaching Writing. The Birmingham Institute for Teaching Writing pursues a simple mission with a profound impact: to bring together writing teachers across the state for a meaningful conversation about teaching writing.
UAB Book Talk. Please join us at the monthly Booktalk for informal, insightful, and interesting discussions about books you probably find in classes or other book groups.
Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop. The Ada Long Workshop is designed for high school students interested in creative writing for personal enrichment, preparing for university work in creative writing, and introducing creative writing as a career field.
