BITWThe Birmingham Institute for Teaching Writing pursues a simple mission with a profound impact: to bring together writing teachers across the state for a meaningful conversation about teaching writing. BITW is founded on the premise that these teachers possess significant knowledge about the teaching of writing and that the opportunity to share this knowledge with colleagues can bring about a vibrant culture of writing in Alabama.

BITW provides a full day of activities designed to inform and inspire writing teachers. Collaborative sessions offer participants an opportunity to share their experiences and knowledge as teachers, as well as to network with other teachers in the state. In addition to these sessions, participants can choose specific pedagogy workshops that best fit their interests, including workshops on teaching freshman composition, creative writing, writing about literature, and business writing. A catered lunch provides time to get to know new colleagues and reconnect with old colleagues, and a keynote presentation provides an opportunity to explore current research on writing from experts in Composition Studies.
