Melinda Harrison. Melinda Harrison earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Arts degree in English Studies, TESOL, from Illinois State University (ISU). Her MA thesis, focused on research of the academic literacy needs of students transitioning from an ESL program to first-year composition, earned ISU’s distinguished Fisher Outstanding Thesis award for 2014.

Her professional experience includes teaching English as a Second Language at ISU and at Heartland Community College following several years of teaching high school English literature and composition; currently, she splits her time between UAB’s English Department and UAB’s English Language Institute.

Melinda enjoys working with university students, learning about their background experiences, and serving as a guide to them in reaching their practical and academic writing goals. Melinda spends her time outside the classroom exercising, reading about writing, and living life with her family.
