The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development provide funds for grants to humanities faculty. These funds are awarded through a competitive process to tenure-line junior faculty members in the UAB arts and humanities departments.

Eligibility

  • Tenured or tenure earning faculty at the assistant or associate professor level in one of the following disciplines: Art and Art History, Communication Studies, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science and Public Administration, Theatre
  • Faculty who were awarded a Humanities Grant in the previous two years are not eligible for this cycle.
  • Faculty members already supported by external grants are ineligible for this program.

Funding

  • Individual grants in amounts of up to $3,000 will be funded. Funding is awarded based on potential impact for the faculty member’s research, scholarship, creative activity, and/or teaching.
  • Funding may be used for research-related costs such as:
    • Travel for research, such as visiting archives
    • Purchase of research materials
    • Student research assistants
    • Publication costs
    • Film post-production
  • Course release is not eligible for funding
  • Summer salary is not eligible for funding
  • Travel to attend or present at conferences or workshops is not generally funded

Deadlines and Requirements

  • Proposals for funding are due by Friday, April 2, 2021. They should include:
    • A 250-700 word description of the research, creative project or teaching enhancement project
    • A detailed budget, indicating where and when the money will be spent
    • A cover sheet with signature from the department chair approving the proposal
  • Funds must be spent between May 3, 2021 and August 14, 2022
  • A final written report on the funded project, indicating outcomes and budgetary expenditures must be submitted to the Dean’s office by September 15, 2022

  • Awardees will be notified by email by April 23, 2021. Instructions for transfer of awarded funds will be included in the notification

Announcement

Because the original funding for this award has been exhausted and the goals of this award overlap closely with the Faculty Development Grant program, we expect this will be the last year the Dean’s Humanities Grants program is administered. The CAS Dean’s Office looks forward to a discussion with Chairs and with the Faculty Affairs Committee regarding new programs to support faculty, such as one for mid-career faculty who desire to pivot professionally.
