The importance of El pastor de Filida was recognized long ago. Cervantes pays tribute to it in the famous inspection of Don Quijote's library; and it was praised as well by poets and scholars such as Lope de Vega, Vicente Espinel, Pedro Lanez, Lopez Maldonado, Tamayo de Vargas, and Nicolas Antonio, among the most notable.
