gary wheatGary Wheat received his B.M. Jazz Studies, University of Alabama, 1999. He has been performing and teaching professionally in Birmingham, Alabama since 2000. After studying with Dr. Jonathan Noffsinger at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and earning his Jazz Studies Bachelor’s degree, Mr. Wheat moved to Birmingham to play with his first band, Meteorite, and to tour with national music acts such as the Temptations, the Four Tops, the O’Jays, Percy Sledge, and Frankie Valli. At home, he has logged countless hours at gigs and jam sessions with local jazz names like Cleve Eaton, Bo Berry, Chad Fisher, and Tommy Stewart. Mr. Wheat has also taught saxophone and jazz in private and class settings since August of 2000, building relationships with band directors at most Birmingham metro area public middle and high schools. He has over a decade of college-level teaching experience at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He released his first album, comprised of original modern jazz pieces, in the summer of 2016. It is entitled Star Child and is available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon music, and other online retailers. He has also logged countless studio hours with Birmingham independent recording artists of many genres. His recordings with Meteorite, the Chad Fisher Group, Through the Sparks, Jesse Payne, and with jazz group The Birmingham Seven can be found on Spotify and other music streaming sites.
