Arrix L. Ryce, a local high school honor student who has worked in UAB labs under the supervision of faculty and students, became the first black student to win the Gorgas Scholarship competition in the contest's 67 year history in March.
Congratulations to these highly accomplished, hardworking, and talented individuals in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Goldwater Scholarship Foundation Honors UAB Students
Two University of Alabama at Birmingham students were named 2014 Goldwater Scholars by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in Excellence in Education Foundation. A third UAB student earned an honorable mention.
In a stunning achievement, four College faculty members have been awarded CAREER Awards by the National Science Foundation.
An interdisciplinary collaboration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently established a research method that has expanded the institution’s already robust capacity for discovery, addressing a need that will aid in critical initiatives addressing a variety of diseases including cancer, chronic inflammatory autoimmune diseases and age-related degenerative diseases.

UAB Names New Chair of Biology
Steven Austad, Ph.D., has been named chair of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Biology. Austad comes to UAB from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham unveiled the state’s largest and most advanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facility this morning at a grand-opening event and tour.

Dr. Benjamin Yancey Wins Travel Grants
Dr. Benjamin Yancey, Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellow for Dr. Sergey Vyazovkin, was recently awarded the Fall 2013 CIBA Young Scientist Travel Award by the Younger Chemists Committee (YCC).
