Remembering Professor Marlene Johnson
It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Professor Marlene Johnson on November 2, 2020. After teaching in the UAB Department of Theatre for 14 years, Prof. Johnson will be remembered as a dedicated educator, a generous colleague, and an inspired artist. She is survived by her husband Edwin Booth and sister Myrna Johnson Moehring.

Graduating Theatre UAB senior Russell Alexander II of Selma selected to Atlanta’s Aurora Theatre Company
Russell Alexander II will graduate April 29 and begin work with a professional acting company, after performing with Theatre UAB and garnering a national award from the Kennedy Center.

Chosen by a scout from the UAB Department of Theatre for a scholarship, Frankle says the lessons she learned as a young actor from UAB faculty and the Tour Groups program stick with her still today.

UAB’s Nole Jones Wins Fellowship to One of the Best Graduate Music Programs in the Nation
Jones, of Prattville, graduates April 30 with a dual degree in music and theater with honors and heads to the University of Illinois for a Master of Music degree this fall.
The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival awarded UAB student Russell Alexander II a national winner in Outstanding Performance by an Actor category, and nominated “SFB” for a host of awards.

Senior Nole Jones Reaches National Semi-Finals
Nole Jones has sung his way to the top. The baritone, one of only 14 men in the country to make the semi-final round, competed at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Student Auditions.

Three Chairs Named ICFAD Fellows
Department of Theatre Chair Kelly Dean Allison, Department of Music Chair Patrick Evans, and Department of Art and Art History Chair Lauren Lake have been chosen as fellows for the International Council of Fine Arts Deans (ICFAD).
Rising UAB senior and music and theatre major Nole Jones will compete at the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Student Auditions in Greensboro, North Carolina, on July 7.

Stitching History: Theatre Students Explore the Fabric of Time
Last fall, a local vintage-clothing collector donated more than 200 pieces to the UAB Department of Theatre—rack upon rack of dresses, skirts, bodices, hats, gloves, shoes, parasols, fans, a few men’s garments, sporting equipment, and a blue silk-peacock suit.

A New Lead for Musical Theatre at UAB
Valerie Accetta, M.F.A., assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and the head of UAB’s new bachelor of fine arts degree program in musical theatre, has plenty of impressive roles under her belt, from playing romantic lead Margy Frake in the first national tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s State Fair to singing baroque opera in Greece.
