When Renita Lewis enrolled in college in 2008, she was focused on two things: playing basketball and studying nursing. So, it might be a surprise to learn that she is now an accomplished actor earning her Master of Fine Arts degree in Drama at The Julliard School and starring in a play at Lincoln Center in New York City. For Lewis, the pivot into the arts began with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Theatre.

Theatre teaches soft skills

Creative high school students find a home in theatre departments because they feel valued. But we also need to be thinking about the future.

The foundation aims to advance the field of medicine and broaden the arts by providing scholarships to qualifying juniors and seniors at universities in the South.

This academic year has been unlike any other. Students and faculty have navigated unprecedented complexity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and, over the course of the past 14 months, they have exemplified resiliency and creativity.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Professor Marlene Johnson on November 2, 2020. After teaching in the UAB Department of Theatre for 14 years, Prof. Johnson will be remembered as a dedicated educator, a generous colleague, and an inspired artist. She is survived by her husband Edwin Booth and sister Myrna Johnson Moehring.

Faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History, Department of Music, and Department of Theatre explore their skills locally and abroad.
Russell Alexander II will graduate April 29 and begin work with a professional acting company, after performing with Theatre UAB and garnering a national award from the Kennedy Center.

Showcase

The UAB Departments of Theatre, Art and Art History and Music are just a few areas creating learning experiences for students that go far beyond the classroom.  And the community is benefiting as well.
