Biology major Alex Dawson, a junior in Dr. Shahid Mukhtar’s lab, received the Dean’s Award for a poster he presented at the University of West Alabama’s 6th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in March 2017. Dawson was one of more than 40 undergraduate students to present a research project at the regional symposium.

Isabella Mak of Dothan and Eli Ussery of Columbus, Georgia, have been named Mr. and Ms. UAB, and Lakshmi Subramani of Madison and Daniel Alejandro Mendoza of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, were named first alternates.

UAB Grad Student Uncovers Alabama Fossils Likely from Oldest Ancestor of Modern Sea Turtles
The evidence found suggests the earliest ancestors of modern sea turtles may have come from the Deep South.
Intrepid students are exchanging their textbooks for a world atlas, studying sustainability in the Netherlands, Spanish in Costa Rica—even marine ecology in Antarctica. Saving Sea Turtles from Above
UAB graduate student Elizabeth Bevan is using drones to document previously unexplored habits of turtles in the Gulf of Mexico.
Two UAB students will travel to other institutions and take part in a research project as part of the Amgen Scholars program.
Elizabeth Bevan receives $15,000 award to continue marine research in pursuit of doctoral degree at UAB.
Sophomores Kevin Lee and Daniel Mendoza will study abroad at the American University in Dubai this summer.

UAB Graduate School hosted its 2016 Graduate Student Research Days research presentation competition March 9 through 11 in the Hill Student Center Ballrooms.
